Disabled Doggy Daycare

Why consider rehabilitation after your dog’s IVDD event?

Rehabilitation after an IVDD event -whether conservative or surgical management- can make a world of difference in your dog’s recovery and overall well-being.

Here’s how it can help:

  • Pain Relief: Rehab therapies like massage and heat treatments can help ease your dog’s pain, making them feel more comfortable as they heal.
  • Better Mobility: Through targeted exercises, rehabilitation strengthens muscles, improves flexibility, and helps restore joint function—critical for your dog to move more freely again.
  • Faster Healing: Rehab promotes better circulation, reduces swelling, and helps tissue repair more quickly, reducing the risk of long-term damage.
  • Rebuilding Strength & Coordination: After an IVDD event, your dog’s strength and coordination may be compromised. Rehabilitation helps rebuild that muscle strength and coordination, so they can regain confidence in their movements.
  • Preventing Future Issues: Rehab can help address muscle imbalances and improve posture, lowering the risk of further spinal injuries or recurring IVDD problems down the road.
  • Speeding Up Recovery: A structured rehab plan can help your dog recover more quickly and get back to enjoying their daily activities, so they don’t miss out on the things they love.
  • Supporting Nerve Healing: If your dog has nerve damage from the IVDD event, rehab can stimulate the area, encouraging nerve regeneration and helping restore function.
  • Boosting Quality of Life: Rehab isn’t just physical—it can also lift your dog’s spirits by reducing the frustration and anxiety that often comes with limited mobility, helping them feel happier and more relaxed.
  • Tailored Care: Your dog’s rehab program will be personalized to fit their specific needs, ensuring that every step of their recovery is carefully planned and adjusted based on their progress.
  • Reducing Dependence on Medications: Through effective pain management and rehab exercises, your dog may require fewer medications, which can be beneficial for their overall health.

What we do at High Five Paws:

Rest easy knowing your dog is in safe, caring hands while you're unable to be there

This service was inspired out of my experience working in surgery at a referral hospital, where I saw many dog owners struggling to care for their pets once they were discharged from hospital. For many, it was a stressful time, as they navigated the challenges of caring for a partially paralysed dog, uncertain of their recovery timeline and extent. Basic needs like bladder care, keeping a crated dog mentally stimulated, and performing essential exercises like Passive Range of Motion were difficult, especially while juggling a regular work schedule.

This led to the creation of “Disabled Doggy Daycare”. Unlike standard daycare, this service is specially tailored for dogs who require extra care, including regular exercises, nursing support, and a calm, peaceful environment to assist with their recovery.

After an Initial Assessment and a discussion with your dog’s treating veterinarian, you can book your dog into the “Disabled Doggy Daycare” program. You’ll have the option to board your dog for either a full day (8 hours) or a half-day (4 hours). Upon drop-off, we’ll have a brief chat to address any concerns, updates on your dog’s progress, or any other important details.

During their stay, your furry friend will be crated in their own personal crate, with various crate sizes available (ranging from 105×70 cm to 77×52 cm). Each crate contains an orthopaedic bed and is situated in a quiet, climate-controlled environment. Your dog will go through multiple short exercise sessions, tailored to their specific needs. These may include passive range of motion exercises, assisted treadmill walking, or other exercises designed to reflect their current abilities—such as strengthening or proprioceptive work. If necessary, I’ll also use electrical stimulation for atrophied muscles or a TENS machine for pain relief.

Throughout the day, I’ll ensure all their needs are met, from toilet breaks or assistance with toileting (including urinary catheter or cystostomy tube care), to giving medications and maintaining their cleanliness and comfort.

To round off the day, your dog will receive a soothing massage to relieve secondary muscle tension and relax after all the hard work.
